Is There a Platonic Theory of Perception in Theaetetus?
An affirmative answer is often given to this question: see especially Cornford [2], Modrak [109], Nakhnikian [111] and Reed [114]. Despite slight variations and more or less elaboration (and omitting Nakhnikian’s more outrageous views), the claim is essentially that the fluxist theory of perception (hereafter FTP) was believed by Plato. The evidence adduced for this claim is as follows:
That FTP is paralleled elsewhere in Plato’s writings.
That it is never refuted in Theaetetus.
That it is a consequence of premisses that Plato believed to be true.
